A south-central Las Vegas intersection was the site of a crash that involved a car and an ambulance, according to recent reports. The ambulance overturned, causing minor injuries to the passenger and other occupants.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Russell Road and Valley View Boulevard when a car crashed into the ambulance, causing it to roll on its side. No charges have currently been filed, but police continue to investigate the cause of the crash. It is not clear if alcohol or speed were factors in the accident.
Crashes Involving Emergency Vehicles
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were a total of 34 people killed in 2012 in accidents involving ambulances. In the majority of the cases, the fatalities were occupants of other vehicles, accounting for 20 deaths. Three ambulance drivers, eight ambulance passengers and three pedestrians were also killed in these crashes. In addition, there were 14 fatalities involving fire trucks and 83 fatalities involving police cars that year as well.
While emergency vehicle deaths are not as common as other types of crashes, they can still result in serious injuries for innocent victims. However, it may be difficult for someone who is involved in one of these crashes to recover compensation for injuries without the help of an attorney with experience in navigating the complex issues surrounding these types of crashes.
Suing the Rescuers
Some people feel that suing the driver of an ambulance, fire truck or police car would be unethical, even if that person caused injury to someone else. Others may believe that police officers, fire fighters and ambulance drivers enjoy immunity from lawsuits. The fact is that when the driver of a rescue vehicle is negligent, he or she can often be held accountable for the injuries that are caused. In some cases, the employing agency may also be liable for damages caused by employee negligence.
