A man accused of killing two teen girls while driving drunk has had his bail revoked by a Las Vegas judge, according to recent reports. Seong Mo Lee, 22, appeared in court accused of causing the deaths of Kamesha J’Nyah Gilmore, 17, and Gabriell Rene Thomas, 18, in a crash at the intersection of Boulder Highway and Russell Road. This is Lee’s second DUI charge in less than one year.
Police believe that Lee was traveling at an extremely high speed when he struck the vehicle in which the victims were riding. The driver may have been making a U-turn at the time of the collision. Lee’s vehicle struck the teen’s car in the right side, rolling it onto its roof.
Lee has been charged with felony DUI resulting in death. He was arrested in July by the Nevada Highway Patrol for DUI, open container, cell phone use while driving and possession of drug paraphernalia.
DUI Kills Innocent Victims
Unfortunately, the fact that Lee was behind the wheel after a DUI charge is not unusual. Mothers Against Drunk Driving estimates that as many as two-thirds of all DUI drivers are repeat offenders and that the average offender has driven drunk 80 times before being arrested. This means that there are many people on the road who either have not yet been arrested for DUI but regularly drive drunk or who have been arrested but continue to drive drunk.
The implications for innocent victims are clear. When someone drives drunk, whether it is his or her first or second offense does not matter. What matters is that innocent people are often injured or killed by these actions.
