A semi-truck carrying beer crashed recently on Nevada’s Interstate 15 near Barstow, California, interfering with heavy freeway traffic after the recent prize fight in Las Vegas, according to reports. The crash involved both the semi and another vehicle. At least two people were transported to area hospitals in undisclosed condition. The beer that the semi was carrying was spilled onto the highway, but the California Highway Patrol noted that the spill had been contained and did not pose any environmental threats.
Semi Truck Accidents Often Take A Heavy Toll
Semi truck accidents are some of the most deadly of all traffic crashes. The huge size of these trucks, which can weigh 80,000 pounds when fully loaded, means that they carry a tremendous amount of force when they hit something. If the object they hit is another vehicle carrying passengers, it is likely that those people will suffer the brunt of injuries in the accident and not the driver of the truck.
This idea is borne out by the statistics. According to the US Department of Transportation, there are around 500,000 trucking accidents in the United States each year, with about 5,000 of these accidents resulting in fatalities. However, one out of every eight traffic fatalities involves a large truck collision. This means that although fatal crashes make up only about one percent of all trucking accidents, they account for nearly 12 percent of traffic fatalities overall. Additionaly, 98 percent of all fatalities in trucking crashes are the occupants of other vehicles and not the large truck.
Clearly, the occupants of other vehicles are the most likely to be injured or killed in a trucking accident. Unfortunately, many of these victims never receive the compensation they deserve for their injuries because trucking companies and their attorneys fight so hard to prevent them from collecting.
