Recent reports show that a bicyclist was involved in a crash on the Las Vegas Strip and may have suffered life-threatening injuries. The crash occurred around 8:00 a.m. on the 3300 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard. Investigators are still attempting to determine what happened, but the crash appears to have involved the cyclist and another vehicle. The bicyclist was taken to Sunrise Hospital Trauma and southbound Las Vegas Boulevard was temporarily shut down at Spring Mountain.
Higher Risks for Cyclist on the Road
Bicycle accidents pose a high risk of injury and even death for cyclist, especially when compared with victims who are inside passenger vehicles. According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 743 cyclists were killed in traffic accidents in 2013 while another 48,000 were injured. In these instances, around 29 percent were hit by a vehicle. When a cyclist is sharing the road, drivers are required to be aware of the bicycle and rider in order to avoid a collision. However, if a driver is distracted or fails to notice the cyclist, he or she may be held liable for any resulting injuries.
When a cyclist is injured in a crash, he or she may have grounds to seek compensation from the at-fault driver through a personal injury suit. As in all personal injury suits, the plaintiff must show that the driver was acting negligently and that this failure to act with due caution led to the crash and resulting injuries. If a driver was distracted, drunk, speeding or acting in any other negligent way, the driver may be held responsible and ordered to pay the victim compensation.
This compensation is intended to make the victim “whole” again. While those who suffer serious injuries may never fully recover, this compensation should cover any medical expenses as well as compensate the victim for pain and suffering. If the victim is unable to work because of injuries, the compensation should also cover this lost income.
