A Lake Mead Boulevard motorcycle crash killed one and critically injured an 11-year-old child, according to reports. Las Vegas Metro Police say that the accident occurred at the intersection of Lamb and Nellis Roads when a motorcycle rider ran into a car. It is unclear if the child was a passenger on the motorcycle or in the car.
Motorcycle Crashes High in Las Vegas This Year
According to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, there have been five motorcycle fatalities through April 14, 2015. These fatalities make up about 15 percent of the total traffic deaths for the year, even though motorcyclists make up a very small percentage of the total drivers. Motorcyclists are at an increased risk for death and injury in a collision. According to the Insurance Information Institute, motorcyclists are 26 times more likely to be killed and five times more likely to be injured than the occupants of a passenger vehicle in a crash.
Intersections are one of the most common sites for motorcycle crashes. Drivers of passenger vehicles have a tendency to ignore the rights of motorcycle riders on the road. Many motorcyclists are injured and killed every year because drivers in passenger vehicles fail to yield at intersections. In some cases, the drivers claim they did not see the motorcycle rider; in other cases, the drivers are simply aggressive.
It is also important to remember that children are particularly vulnerable in motorcycle crashes. If children are going to ride with their parents, it is critical to protect them with helmets and other gear as well as to ensure they have received safety instructions. A better plan is to avoid taking children on motorcycles whenever possible because of the increased risk of injury to them.
