Cyclist Dead After Drunk Driving Hit-and-Run

Posted by: Jack Bernstein

According to police, a 40-year-old man has been arrested after turning himself in for the drunk driving hit-and-run accident that left a 33-year-old cyclist dead. The driver, Abraham Lebron, Jr., of Las Vegas, says he hit a cyclist who was crossing Sahara Avenue. The cyclist was taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead. Lebron initially fled the scene but later turned himself in to police. He was charged with drunk driving and hit-and-run.

Road Dangers for Cyclists in Las Vegas

Cycling is a popular means of transportation for a growing number of Las Vegas residents. In 2010 it was estimated that six cyclists were killed and another 527 were injured in traffic accidents.

Cyclists are at a far greater risk of being injured and even killed in a traffic accident than the occupants of passenger vehicles. While many wear helmets and other protective gear, it is often not enough protection against a large metal vehicle moving at a high rate of force and speed. Cyclists who are involved in accidents could suffer extensive injuries including broken bones, abrasions and even traumatic brain injury. These injuries can lead to high hospital bills and long recovery times.

Cyclists who have been injured in an accident may have grounds to seek compensation. Money for medical bills, pain and suffering and even lost income could be paid to you if someone else was responsible for your injuries. For example, if you were in a bike lane and a car got too close and hit you, the driver could be responsible for the accident and liable for damages.
