People add dogs to their homes for many different reasons. Some like to have them to help with hunting and other outdoor activities. Others want a dog for a running or hiking companion. Some want to have one or more to help defend their homes. Still others simply want a family companion that adds to their lives. People have many different reasons for wanting dogs, but one thing Americans have in common is that everyone loves man’s best friend. Another thing that dog owners have in common is that they have a responsibility to keep their dogs from situations where they can hurt others by biting them.
Unfortunately, that responsibility is not always met, and people are badly injured or even killed as a result of dog bite attacks with alarming regularity. According to estimates that are currently available, as many as 4 million people per year are bitten by dogs in the United States and nearly 1 million of them are injured badly enough that they need to report to the nearest emergency room for treatment. Sadly, the majority of people who are injured in dog bite attacks are children under the age of 10 years old, as these young people are simply not old enough to recognize the dangers.
People who are bitten and injured by dogs often hear from insurance adjusters soon after the incident occurs. These insurance adjusters will call and express concern with the injuries that have been inflicted. That concern is likely genuine, but so is that insurance adjuster’s loyalty to his or her employer, which means that his or her job is to limit the amount of financial exposure faced by that insurance company. He or she is not working for your best interests, and the quicker and cheaper that this type of matter is disposed of the better it is for them.
This is not how things should be when a dog bite attack occurs, as these are terrifying incidents that often leave as many emotional and psychological scars as they do physical ones. Dog owners need to be held accountable for failing to properly secure and/or train and control their dogs, and Nevada personal injury laws exist to allow people who have been injured to prove that a dog owner was negligent. However, proving this negligence successfully is much easier said than done.
The Las Vegas dog bite lawyers at Bernstein & Poisson have been helping people who were injured in attacks for 29 years. We have seen the horrors that can be forced upon people who are bitten, seriously injured and badly disfigured because of a dog’s ability to tear and shred with its large teeth and powerful jaws. Dogs are wonderful additions to most families, but everyone needs to understand that they are also animals that have instincts and physical capabilities that can lead to an enormous amount of harm if they are not properly controlled.
Bernstein & Poisson makes sure that dog owners are reminded of that necessity when we take on a case on behalf of someone who has been injured in this manner. If you or someone you love has been harmed in a dog bite attack, contact the firm today to schedule a free initial consultation.
