Fatal Accident Believed to Be Street Racing Related

Posted by: Jack Bernstein

According to police reports, a deadly two-car crash in Las Vegas may have been related to illegal street racing. Michael Anthony Aviles, 19, of Las Vegas died when the 1998 Pontiac Firebird he was driving crashed with a 1998 Honda CRX on Spanish Ridge Avenue near Russell Road and Durango Drive. Witnesses say that the Aviles left the roadway and hit a block wall before coming back onto the road to hit the Honda, which was driven by another 19-year-old.

Aviles was dead at the scene when rescue workers arrived, and the driver of the Honda had fled on foot. Witnesses claimed that both vehicles were traveling at a very high rate of speed, leading police to speculate that the two drivers may have been racing.

Street Racing: A Deadly Sport

Street racing is a “sport” that has gained popularity in the past few years among young people, but one that frequently leads to death or serious injury. The National Hot Rod Association has publicly condemned street racing as dangerous, citing National Highway Transportation Safety Administration statistics that show racing to be a factor in around 135 fatal crashes per year. Additionally, at least 5,700 teens die in traffic accidents each year, some of them due to excessive speed.

While teens are most likely to race, they are also most likely to lose control of their vehicles due to lack of experience. The NHRA encourages teens who want to race to become involved with local tracks rather than engage in illegal and dangerous street races.
