Getting Ready for Safe Holidays

Posted by: Jack Bernstein

holiday_injuries_laddersHaving a safe and happy holiday season is much easier if you are aware of the dangers present at this time of year for accidents and injuries. The holidays always see an increase in various types of accidents, so taking a few moments to be sure that you and your loved ones are safe may be a good plan.

The personal injury attorneys at Bernstein & Poisson in Las Vegas are here to offer you advice and help to keep your holidays safe. Be sure that you consider the following issues as you enjoy your holiday season:

  • Plan for designated drivers. Avoiding driving while drinking or riding with intoxicated drivers is one of the biggest single steps you can take to keep yourself and your family safe. This means never getting behind the wheel if you have had even one drink and refusing to ride with anyone who is not completely sober. Offer non-alcoholic options at your holiday parties or ask for them when you go to other people’s homes. Most people are happy to support designated drivers with soft drinks or coffee rather than alcohol. If you do drink and must travel unexpectedly, be sure to call a cab or a friend for a ride, even if it is a short distance to your home.
  • Be careful with heights. This is a time of year when many people are up and down ladders, climbing onto chairs or tables and running up and down stairs in an effort to complete holiday decorating or other activities. Take a few moments to use simple safety precautions while you decorate or store items and always have help handy. Never climb on a ladder or other object when you are alone.
  • Watch out for fires. Home fires spike at the holidays primarily due to faulty electrical equipment and cooking. Use only approved electrical cords and never overload your cords with too many lights. Discard lights or other electrical items that may be damaged. Watch out for spilled water around electrical cords as well. When it comes to cooking, pay attention to your items to avoid flash oven fires or grease fires. If you do have a fire, have a plan to put it out, including a handy fire extinguisher in your kitchen area.

The attorneys at Bernstein & Poisson in Las Vegas wish you and your family safe, happy holiday enjoyment!
