Posted by: Jack Bernstein

A 41-year-old Las Vegas man who is believed to be homeless suffered critical injuries in a pedestrian accident in the northeast valley, according to reports. According to authorities, Jason Miller was pushing a shopping cart near the intersection of East Bonanza Road and Wardelle Street when he apparently darted into the westbound lanes. He was struck by a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with injuries that were said to be life-threatening. The driver and passenger in the Pacifica were not injured. Metro police are investigating the crash.

Las Vegas Pedestrian Dangers

In the last few years, Las Vegas has seen a large number of injuries and deaths to pedestrians. In 2014, there were 34 pedestrian deaths; in 2013, the number reached a high of 47; and in 2012, there were 39 pedestrians killed on Las Vegas streets.

Pedestrian deaths make up a relatively large number of accident fatalities in the city. For 2014, 36 percent of all traffic fatalities in Las Vegas were pedestrians. There are several possible reasons for this high percentage. For one thing, many people are walking on the streets in Las Vegas at any given time as opposed to driving, especially in certain areas such as the Strip. Further, many of these pedestrians may be drinking alcohol, leading to poor decision-making and higher levels of risk taking.

It is very important for pedestrians to stay safe. However, it is also very important for drivers to be aware of pedestrians and to avoid crashes. The majority of the responsibility for avoiding a pedestrian crash rests with the driver, and if he or she is negligent, it is possible that the driver may be held civilly liable for the resulting injuries.

However, a pedestrian accident victim will not automatically be paid compensation in most cases. These victims may need the help of a personal injury attorney who can work with them to recover monetary compensation for pain and suffering, medical bills, lost wages and other costs related to the accident.
