According to Metro police, a car crashed into a Las Vegas bus stop last week, sending five people to the hospital.
Police have confirmed that Daniel Cronin, the driver of the Nissan Pathfinder that crashed into the bus stop, was speeding. According to reports, Cronin lost control of the vehicle and hit a bus stop near Rainbow Boulevard and Balzar Avenue. According to witnesses, the vehicle hit the sidewalk, striking two children and a female adult before landing on top of the bus bench. The female pedestrian suffered serious injuries, while one child suffered a broken foot and the other head injuries. The victims, along with the Cronin and female passenger of the vehicle, were taken to the University Medical Center.
According to Metro Sgt. Richard Strader, Daniel Cronin was arrested for prior outstanding traffic warrants. Currently he has not been charged with any crimes related to the bus stop crash. Strader said that when he was released from the hospital he would be booked.
Strader stated that “We’re a distracted society. When you’re on the road, you need to have your wits about you…This was totally avoidable.”
The Risks of Distracted Driving
Distracted driving is the term used to encompass any activity performed while driving that distracts the driver’s attention from the primary task of driving. Typical driving distractions include:
- Talking on a cell phone
- Texting on a cell phone
- Talking to passengers
- Eating and/or drinking
- Watching a video
- Adjusting the music
In 2012, there were a total of 3,328 individuals killed in distraction-related crashes and another 421,000 injured. Because distracted driving is so dangerous, it is a commonly-cited form of negligence in personal injury cases. Those who cause an accident because they were distracted may be acting negligently. If a driver can be proven negligent, anyone that they injured in the crash can file and potentially win a personal injury suit against them.
