A 73-year-old woman died in a Las Vegas crash involving two vehicles at the intersection of Rainbow Boulevard and Hacienda Avenue, according to recent reports. The victim was a passenger in a Mercury Grand Marquis and was trapped for a short time before being extracted and rushed to University Medical Center, where she died.
Police believe that the 68-year-old man driving the Mercury ran the light at Hacienda and was attempting a left turn when the vehicle was hit by an Audi S5. The Audi struck the right passenger door. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
Las Vegas Intersections: Dangerous Roads
There are certain intersections in Las Vegas that have statistically higher rates of accidents than others. According to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, the top injury collision sites for the past six months have been Buffalo at Spring Mountain, with 9 crashes; Eastern at Tropicana with 9 crashes; Stewart at Pecos with 8 crashes; Rainbow at Dewey with 8 crashes; and Rainbow at Desert Inn with 8 crashes.
Intersection crashes often result in serious injury, particularly when one vehicle is making a turn in front of the other. Left turns are often the most deadly, because the passenger side of the turning vehicle is completely exposed to oncoming traffic. The passengers on the right side of the vehicle are often the victims of the brunt of the force from the impact with little protection against injury.
