Las Vegas Man Killed in Scooter Accident

Posted by: Jack Bernstein

A Las Vegas man was killed when the scooter on which he was riding collided with an ambulance, according to recent reports. The accident took place at the intersection of Boulder Highway and Fremont Street with Sahara Avenue when Michael Ortiz, 50, hit a MedicWest ambulance. The ambulance was responding to a call and had its lights and siren engaged at the time of the crash. An unidentified woman, 49, was riding with Ortiz at the time and is listed in critical condition at an area hospital.

Accidents Involving Small Vehicles

Accidents involving very small vehicles like scooters are different than accidents involving cars. When someone is a driver or passenger on a scooter or a similar vehicle, it is far more likely that the person will suffer serious injury if there is a crash. This is because riders on scooters or bicycles have very little protection during a crash, while passengers in vehicles have a great deal more.

This does not mean that drivers or passengers of two-wheeled vehicles cannot take safety precautions. Both drivers and passengers should always wear safety helmets that are tested and approved for use on the type of vehicle in question. In addition, knee, elbow, arm and leg padding may assist in preventing road rash and other minor injuries in a low-speed crash.

However, in a crash above much more than walking speed, riders on bicycles, scooters and other very small two-wheeled vehicles do not stand much chance of escaping with no injuries, even if they do use safety equipment. It is more likely that they will suffer injury in the form of head or spinal trauma, skin abrasions and broken bones. Additionally, many injuries suffered in a two-wheeled vehicle collision with a larger vehicle may result in long-term or permanent disabilities.
