Slip and fall accidents may seem like minor occurrences that actually lend themselves to humorous anecdotes and depictions, as all of us have seen the common ‘slipping on the banana peel’ scene in movies and television shows at one time or another. However, these accidents are not only prevalent, as tens of thousands of people are seriously injured because of them every year but they are also dangerous in that thousands of people are killed because of slip and fall accidents on an annual basis.
Insurance companies that write policies for business entities and homeowners clearly take this problem very seriously, as they are constantly studying the issue and releasing papers and guidelines to policyholders that are designed to minimize the risk of slip and fall accidents. Insurance companies deal in fact and in numbers when they are reviewing their own positions, and when they see a trend it should be noted by others. Such a trend was recently revealed in a paper that was completed by CNA, a large insurance company in the United States. That paper challenged the way that most people thought of slip and fall accidents.
An article describing the work can be found here, and in it there are certain findings regarding the causes of slip and fall accidents that may come as a surprise. For years, the conventional wisdom was that people are usually injured in these incidents because of their own mistakes. Namely, slip and fall accidents were caused by individuals’ lack of coordination and judgment, or so the belief went. This study found that these accidents were primarily caused by flooring surfaces with poor slip resistance. As such, CNA recommended that companies and homeowners that will welcome visitors take steps to install mats and other devices designed to minimize this risk.
In addition to the findings regarding the causes of slip and fall accidents, the paper revealed that slip and fall accidents were the most common business dispute encountered by approximately 60 percent of property owners. 80 percent of property owners stated that slip and fall accidents were one of the top three causes of business disputes on an annual basis. Clearly, these incidents are also taken very seriously by property owners in addition to insurance companies.
People who are injured in slip and fall accidents tend to be unsure of what to do after they are hurt. That’s because the laws governing these situations are extremely confusing to those who are not familiar with them and insurance companies are generally quick to act in hopes of settling a matter before it moves into the legal realm. Many times, these quick resolutions do not lead to positive results for people who are injured.
