A small baby was injured and is in unknown condition while a man was killed in a pedestrian crash that took place near South Rainbow Boulevard and West Warm Springs Road, according to recent reports. Officials stated that the child was conscious when they arrived at the southwest valley accident site. It is unclear if the man was carrying the baby or if the child was in a stroller at the time of the crash.
Both victims were taken to the University Medical Center. The adult male was pronounced dead while the child was treated. There is no word at this point on the baby’s condition or the child’s relationship to the man.
The driver who hit the pair fled the scene. Early reports indicated that he or she may have hit other cars in the area after leaving the scene of the accident. It is unclear if the driver is in custody.
Hit-and-Run: Pedestrians at Most Risk
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian crashes constitute 11 percent of all fatal traffic accidents, down from 13 percent twenty years ago. Because so many more people are hurt or killed in car crashes than pedestrian crashes, this means that a pedestrian has a much greater chance overall of being killed in a crash than a passenger car occupant. The fact is that a pedestrian has little to no protection in a crash, while a passenger car occupant has a relatively high level of physical security.
Nearly half of all pedestrian accidents are alcohol-related, and 20 percent involve hit-and-run accidents. In fact, pedestrians are more likely to be involved in a hit-and-run crash than almost any other type of accident victim.
