An unidentified man was critically injured after his motorcycle crashed into a turning truck in Las Vegas Monday afternoon.
According to Metro’s Fatal Detail, the crash occurred at 927 Decatur Blvd., which is near the intersection at Charleston Boulevard, shortly after 12:30 p.m. Metro spokesman Larry Hadfield stated that a 2014 Yamaha motorcycle and a 1991 Chevrolet pickup, each traveling in opposite directions on Decatur, collided when the pickup truck turned left in front of the oncoming motorcycle. The unidentified 24-year-old driver of the Yamaha struck the rear passenger side of the truck, causing him to fly off his bike and slide to a stop on the roadway
The man suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to University Medical Center. The truck driver, and unidentified 62-year-old man, reportedly finished the turn and stopped. He was unharmed. The accident caused a four-hour road closure on Northbound Decatur from Charleston.
Motorcycle Risks and Personal Injury
While riding a motorcycle is an extremely popular pastime in the US, it also carries high risk. Motorcyclists do not have the added protection of a steel frame like those who occupy passenger vehicles. Like pedestrians, motorcyclists face a higher risk of injury and even death when involved in a traffic accident.
Unfortunately, many motorcyclists are involved in accidents because those in passenger vehicles failed to see them before turning or switching lanes. Even a slight bump from a large vehicle can cause a motorcycle to spin out of control, injuring or killing the rider. If the motorcyclist survives the accident, it is likely or she will suffer severe injuries. Often, motorcyclists who have been injured in an accident will require extensive medical treatment and long-term therapy in the recovery process. This is costly and can lead to financial ruin, especially if the injured rider is unable to work. This is why the law allows those who have been injured by a negligent driver to seek compensation for damages sustained due to a traffic accident.
