A 64-year-old motorcycle rider has died from injuries sustained in a crash in the south valley area of Las Vegas, according to recent reports.
Gary Stahl was traveling east on Windmill Lane on a Harley Davidson motorcycle when the driver of a Chevy Camaro made a left turn onto Windmill in front of him. Stahl was unable to avoid the collision and was ejected from the bike.
Stahl was taken to an area hospital with critical injuries and died some time later. The driver of the Camaro suffered minor injuries.
Motorcycle Accidents and Liability Claims
Motorcycle accidents are much more likely to result in death or serious injury than car accidents. In fact, according to recent reports from the Insurance Information Institute, motorcyclists are about 26 times more likely to die in a collision than passenger car occupants and are five times more likely to be injured.
There are approximately 8.5 million motorcycles on the highways today. In 2013, there were 4,668 deaths related to motorcycle accidents and 88,000 injuries. While these numbers have declined in recent years, motorcycles are still incredibly dangerous when compared statistically to passenger cars.
However, this does not necessarily mean that motorcyclists are less careful drivers or take greater chances behind the wheel than drivers of passenger cars. In fact, motorcycle riders may be more careful drivers because they are aware of what danger they are in every time they take their bikes on the road. However, that does not stop other drivers from causing crashes by turning in front of oncoming motorcycles, crowding motorcycle riders out of lanes or off the road, or just ignoring the motorcycle rider’s rights.
