According to recent reports, an accident at Craig Road and Simmons Street in North Las Vegas has left one person dead and two others injured. According to police sources, a Ford Mustang traveling west on Craig struck a Ford Explorer heading south on Simmons. The force of the impact pushed the Explorer into the eastbound lanes on Craig.
The driver of the Explorer was pronounced dead at the scene. The two male occupants of the Mustang were transported to UMC with injuries that are reported to be non-life-threatening.
Police say that the Mustang was traveling at a high rate of speed, which was a factor in the crash.
The Dangers of Speeding
According to the US Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a contributing factor in 30 percent of all fatal crashes in 2012, resulting in 10,219 fatalities across the nation.
Research has shown that of all drivers, young males are most likely to speed. In 2012, 42 percent of speeding drivers involved in crashes also had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. In Nevada, there were 258 traffic fatalities in 2012. Of those, 100 were related to speeding.
Speeding, especially when combined with alcohol, can lead to fatal crashes. In many cases, speed does not necessarily cause the accident; however, it does cause a driver to have less time to react to dangerous situations.
Speeding and Personal Injury
Though it is against the law to speed, many still do. Because speed limit signs are clearly posted, those who speed are breaking the law. Those who act negligently and cause an accident may be held responsible for damages should anyone be injured or killed.
