Parkinson’s Disease Risk Increases with TBI

Posted by: Jack Bernstein

According to a recent study published in Annals of Neurology, patients who are aged 55 years and older and suffer a traumatic brain injury are at an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

The team who conducted the study were from the University of California, San Francisco and were led by Raquel C. Gardner, MD. Using inpatient/emergency department International Classification of Disease, Ninth Revision code data from California hospitals, the team identified patients aged 55 years or older who suffered from a TBI. This equated to roughly 52,393 patients between 2005 and 2006. They compared this data with follow-up data ending in 2011. Using these numbers, they estimated the risk of developing Parkinson’s Disease after TBI.

The researchers discovered that TBI patients were more likely than patients who did not suffer a TBI to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. The authors concluded, “Among patients aged ≥55 years presenting to inpatient/emergency department settings with trauma, TBI is associated with a 44% increased risk of developing Parkinson’s Disease over five to seven years that is unlikely to be due to confounding or reverse causation.”
