Hit and Run Accidents
Hit-and-run accidents have been on the rise in recent years. According to a recent report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, the country as a whole saw a 13.7 percent increase in hit-and-run fatalities over a three-year period from 2010-2013, even as traffic-related deaths as a whole declined by almost by five percent. This frightening trend has led lawmakers around the country to propose stiff penalties for those who leave the scene of an accident:
- Legislators in Florida, which had almost 70,000 hit-and-run cases in 2012, considered a bill that would require a minimum three-year prison sentence for motorists convicted of fleeing the scene of an accident.
- In 2012, Arizona passed a law mandating that a person convicted of hit-and-run resulting in serious injury will sacrifice his or her driver’s license for five years.
Peter Kissinger, CEO of AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, believes that alcohol is a major contributing factor to hit-and-run crashes. A motorist may flee an accident scene if he or she has reason to fear arrest.
Consequences Of Reckless Driving
Car accidents are major source of serious injury and death around the country. Some of the most well-known physical injuries are:
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) – One of the most common serious injuries suffered in a vehicle-related accident. Impact causes trauma to the brain; TBI is notorious for long-term and even life-long disability.
Spinal cord injury – Severe injury to the spinal cord can cause paralysis.
Facial Injuries – Broken facial bones often require very expensive cosmetic surgery and extensive recovery time.
