The Eastbound Summerlin Parkway was at a standstill for three hours during the morning commute while Las Vegas police investigated an accident caused by a suspected drunk driver, according to recent reports.
Metro reports that a police motorcycle officer had made a routine traffic stop of a 2003 Chevrolet Blazer. The vehicles were stopped on the parkway’s right shoulder when a 2009 Honda Accord slammed into the officer’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Fortunately, the officer had stepped away from the bike at the time of the crash. The force of the impact threw the bike into the back of the Blazer. The Honda was driven by Brandon Harris, 30, who was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center. He now faces DUI charges. The officer and the driver of the Blazer were not harmed. Harris did suffer minor injuries which did not require hospitalization.
The accident was minor but saw an excessive response from Metro. The Accident Investigation Section Fatal Detail was sent to the scene which led to traffic backup. According to reports the parkway was closed which led to traffic that was backed up for miles starting around 6:45 a.m. The parkway did not reopen to traffic until around 10 a.m.
Metro spokesman officer Miguel Garcia if there is a crash involving a law-enforcement vehicle, an investigation must take place. Unfortunately, because eastbound Summerlin Parkway is only two lanes wide where the accident occurred, the road had to be closed to guarantee the safety of the investigators.
