Scooter Rider Killed in Crash

Posted by: Jack Bernstein

The rider of a Remax 50 sports scooter was killed in a construction zone on Grand Teton Drive and Cimarron Road when he was struck by a 2009 Nissan Maxima, according to recent reports. Evan Michael Thompson, 20, of Las Vegas, died at the University Medical Center after he was transported from the scene of the crash. The driver of the Maxima, a 35-year-old woman whose name has not been released, was turning left onto Cimarron when she struck the scooter, ejecting Thompson and causing him to slide under the car. The driver stayed and cooperated with investigators at the scene.

Las Vegas Accident Statistics—Increases Over 2014

Several categories of traffic accidents in Las Vegas have already outpaced 2014’s numbers, according to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. There have already been 36 traffic fatalities in 2015, compared to only 30 for the entire year of 2014. The biggest jump in numbers comes from pedestrian deaths, which are nearly double 2014’s total of 9 with 15 people killed so far this year. Driver and bicycle fatalities are also higher than 2014 totals, with 9 drivers killed this year so far and 4 pedestrians.

There does not seem to be a reasonable explanation for this spike in traffic-related deaths at this time, although there are some indicators that DUI arrests will outpace last year’s total. Many injury accidents and fatalities are connected with alcohol use. Another factor that may influence a rising death and injury rate is the fact that more people are on the roads as the economy improves and visitors to Las Vegas begin to increase in number. It remains to be seen how the rest of 2015 will appear in terms of traffic fatalities and injuries.
