A 16-year-old Las Vegas boy was pronounced dead at Rose Dominican Hospital after a tragic skateboarding crash in the Palm Hills community. Michael Vaughn, 16, was riding his longboard skateboard through a concrete wash or sunken area when he hit a rock and fell, striking his head.
It is unclear if Vaughn was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident or on whose property the accident took place.
Skateboarding Can Be A Dangerous Sport
Skateboarding accidents account for a large number of emergency room visits for children under the age of 19. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, about 78,000 children per year are treated in emergency rooms across the country for injuries sustained while skateboarding.
Skateboarding injuries are most common for children under the age of 15, who make up about 52 percent of the total of all skateboard-related emergency room visits. About 85 percent of those injured are male.
While arm and wrist injuries are most common, head injuries also make up a large percentage of skateboard-related issues. Wearing wrist guards may help prevent a broken wrist, while helmets can help reduce the risk of head injuries.
What Should I Do If My Child Is Injured In A Skateboarding Accident?
A skateboarding accident can result in severe trauma for both children and their parents as well as expenses related to medical care. If your child has been involved in a skateboarding accident, it is possible someone is liable for these damages, including the child’s medical bills and expenses related to treatment for the injury.
While it is not always the case that someone else holds liability in a skateboarding crash, it is very possible that a property owner who was negligent in securing his or her property against skateboard accidents could be liable. In order to learn whether this may be true, it could be helpful to you to consult a personal injury attorney.
