A young man is dead after a motorcycle crash at East Pebble Road and South Haviland Road, according to police reports. Authorities believe that speed may have been a factor in the crash that claimed the life of Michael Brandon Mattingly, 26, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Mattingly apparently lost control of his bike as he traveled east on Pebble, crashing into a wall. The accident occurred shortly after police got a call about a speeding motorcycle rider on Pebble. The description of the motorcycle, rider and helmet matched Mattingly’s.
Police have not stated if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics in Las Vegas Remain Steady
So far in Las Vegas this year, 17 people have been killed in motorcycle crashes, according to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. A total of 23 people were killed in 2013 due to motorcycle accidents in the city, making up 26 percent of all traffic fatalities for that year. It appears that 2014 is on track to equal 2013’s record, despite the efforts of law enforcement and others to warn drivers and motorcycle riders about possible dangers.
DUI arrests have dropped during the same time period. In 2012, there were more than 6,000 arrests for DUI by Las Vegas police officers; in 2013, that number dropped to 4,800. However, this does not take into account the number of patrol officers assigned or the fact that many accidents now go unreported as Las Vegas police have a new policy of not responding unless there is injury or significant damage. Drivers are told to exchange insurance information and make a report themselves. Therefore, many drunk drivers that might have been caught by the police as the result of a fender bender may now escape notice.
