Teen Killed in Las Vegas Crash

Posted by: Jack Bernstein

Las Vegas police reported that a 19-year-old driver was killed while another driver received minor injuries in a recent crash. The unidentified teen driver of a Nissan 350Z slammed into a traffic signal pole on Sahara Avenue at Sloan Lane after being hit by a Toyota Prius. It is unclear if the driver of the Prius, which was turning left onto Sloan, was at fault or if the teen driver failed to yield. Claudia Rincon, 29, the driver of the Prius, was treated for minor injuries and remained at the scene to report the crash.

An investigation into the crash continues. Investigators will try to determine if drugs, alcohol or distracted driving were factors in the accident and to determine which driver may have been at fault.

Distracted Driving

According to statistics from the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration, 71 percent of teens and young people say they have texted while driving. Additionally, 10 percent of all drivers under the age of 20 who were involved in a fatal crash were reported as distracted at the time of the accident. Adults are also guilty of distracted driving; most adults report talking on a cell phone at least once while driving in the previous month.

While talking on a cell phone can be distracting, texting is particularly dangerous and contributes to many crashes. A text takes your eyes off the road for an average of five seconds. If you are traveling 55 miles per hour, that is enough time to cover the length of a football field. When you are distracted, it is the same as driving that distance blindfolded.

In 2012, 3,328 people were killed in accidents relating to distracted driving. Another 421,000 people were injured by distracted drivers. If you have been injured by or lost a loved one to a distracted driver, it is crucial that you speak to a personal injury lawyer.
